Last weekend I left the city of London, whose populous were mainly frothing at the mouth over the Olympics, and headed north to Derbyshire for the UK’s biggest independent metal festival, Bloodstock Open Air. With a line-up boasting the likes of headliners Behemoth, Machine Head and Alice Cooper, I was hardly biting the proverbial bullet when I decided to dig out my camping gear and drive to an anonymous field where I could indulge in gulping beer from plastic cups with like-minded folks, enjoy the glorious English summer weather and simultaneously be aurally tantalised by a variety of decadent rock and metal acts. Forget Adam “Nergal” Darski, Robb Flynn and The Coop, though; I found the real stars of Bloodstock within the crowds, in every nook and cranny of the festival, championing the notion to be different. And oh yes, they were different alright…
