After hearing the single Flub released weeks before their album Advent was deposited into our universe, I was pretty excited. Not only was "Unrequited" a melodic song that was still heavy and progressive, but this Sacramento, California-based band seems to know what they are doing, demonstrated by the thoughtful construction of the song. It wasn't long after that I received a copy and deconstructed the other two songs on their three track EP.
This five piece band does not disappoint – from the opening track "Euphoria" that opens with a quirky xylophone-like sound, to the suspended periods of experimentation in "Last Chance", Advent will not leave the listener passed out in a deep slumber as a result of boredom (unless that's your preferred method of listening to music). In fact, Advent seems to build a solid foundation for Flub as this three track EP only whets the appetite for more.
The name Flub, meaning: a thing badly or clumsily done; a blunder, appears to contradict the abilities and song writing capability of this band. Melodic guitar solos, consistent mood, Zelda themed merchandise, and epic looking album art all make for a solid presentation.
One interesting note, the music definitely sounds familiar. It appears that the band pulls from several sub genres to make their own version, and besides the Between the Buried and Me sound alike at minute 3:30-3:50, Flub does a fine job laying the ground work for their originality.
The biggest complaint is this EP is only three tracks in length, and the impression left is that Flub is only scratching the surface. After speaking with a member though, I was reassured that the band is currently writing more. This is excellent news. So, devoted fans and listeners, sharpen your knives, and break out the steak sauce, more is coming and will need to be feasted upon.
