Man – I love me some heavy psych. Of course, in this day and age with such a saturated scene the genre can be incredibly difficult to execute. Fortunately, Slow Season manage it with aplomb on their self titled debut release. There is an undeniable sense of poetry to what the band has been able to do on this record and if you love your music slow, heavy and undeniably stoned – then this record will be worth many a spin.
What Slow Season understand that many of their peers miss is that a huge part of what makes psychedelic music work is that there can be passages with no real forward motion – passages that are just happy to be. Yes there are groovy and punchy riffs, but Slow Season aren't afraid to take a minute to step back, smoke a joint and just relax in the power of the sound. It gives a very real sense of poetry to the work and allows you to dive into Slow Season and feel the cleansing power of this kind of music as it washes over you.
Yes – there are definitely moments where the bands youth shines through, but as a whole Slow Season is a remarkably pleasant listen and one that will resonate the listener for spin after spin. Borrowing from everyone from Led Zeppelin to Blue Cheer, Bloodrock to Hawkwind, Slow Season are a true retro band and one who any fan of good old rock and roll music should be able to fall in love with.
