I did not know this either, but thankfully, studio genius Glenn Fricker from Spectre Sound Studios just schooled me. You might remember his mic-cupping device and gave you some angry tips about what not to do when entering the recording studio. He's basically the Lewis Black of recording engineers.
Now, Frick has teamed with our sister site, Gear Gods for a new series of videos about production and the first informative and funny video is titled "The Fans Deserve Better." It talks about bands taking shortcuts using auto tune and sound replacing. I learned that the technology that would eventually be auto-tune was invented by an Exxon engineer in 1997. As Frick puts it, "the company responsible for destroying the Alaskan coast line is the same company that is responsible for destroying music."
