By now, we're guessing you've probably seen Metallica and Lady Gaga's performance at the GRAMMYs. The duet of "Moth Into Flame" didn't exactly go to plan as James Hetfield's mic wasn't plugged in at the beginning of the performance, allegedly due to a stagehand accidentally unplugging a chord. The band eventually released dress rehearsal footage to show what it would've sounded like.
Shortly after the performance, drummer Lars Ulrich said he considered Gaga the "quintessential perfect fifth member of this band." It also seemed like a matter of when and not if the two entities would collaborate with Lars saying "We already started fast-forwarding to the next chapter when we can do more of this." Perhaps he should have checked with his vocalist first?
In a new excerpt from James Hetfield's interview with Chilean newspaper La Tercera, journalist Claudio Vergara finally got James on the record with his thoughts about the performance and his mic cutting out:
"The actual show, live on TV, I was very angry, yes. All the rehearsals, everything was perfect; up to there, everything was working. But, you know, out of my control. Something happened… I don't know what happened. But the silver lining is that Lady Gaga and me were singing closer, and [there] was a little more collaboration. She's an amazing person — very talented."
It was an absolutely awesome moment when the two vocalists made the best of the situation and started sharing a mic. Asked if he sees Metallica collaborating with Lady Gaga in the future, Hetfield responded bluntly:
"No. But even just talking with her, being around her, her energy was very, very exciting. She has lots of ideas, and she likes to push the boundaries like we do. So it was a good fit."
So I guess we can exhale about any potential Lulu-like collaborations from Metallica and Lady Gaga. But who knows what the future holds?
Metallica are going to be pretty busy the next few months on their massive North American tour, so if any collaboration were to happen, it wouldn't be for a long time.
