Brann Dailor Elaborates On MASTODON's New Cancer-Related Album

"It's about going through cancer, going through chemotherapy and all the things associated with that."

"It's about going through cancer, going through chemotherapy and all the things associated with that."

In an interview earlier this month, Mastodon reveals their new album's lyrical content will be about dealing with cancer, with the band hoping to release their now-recorded new album at in the spring of 2017.

In a brand new interview with Rolling Stone, drummer Brann Dailor expands on the original reveal of the lyrical content on the new album. Dailor elaborates that the lyrics heavily allude to a cancer patient.

"At the end of the story, the person simultaneously dies and is saved. It's about going through cancer, going through chemotherapy and all the things associated with that. I didn't want to be literal about it. But it's all in there. You can read between the lines."

Dailor says the lyrics tell the story of a person who is dealt a death sentence by a desert ruler, and then wanders about until their death. So not the literal story of a cancer patient, but one that metaphorically tells it.

If you're one to get stoked about song titles from upcoming albums, this one has songs called "Show Yourself," "Your Own Blood," and "Precious Stones." The album was produced by Brendan O'Brien, who also produced the band's amazing 2011 album Crack The Skye.

No title or official release date are available yet.
