We are very impressed with the refreshing sounds of Sharptooth. We're unveiling the music video for the title track off their new album, Clever Girl out October 27 via Pure Noise Records. Frontwoman Lauren Kashan explained the meaning behind the track:
Clever Girl the track is all about aggressively fighting back against the hands that chain us. It's about "biting back" against oppression of all forms, be that by people in your life, in your society, or systemic forms of oppression like sexism, racism and bigotry. The song was inspired by an argument I had with a guy who tried to tell me and a bunch of other women (many of us survivors of sexual assault) about how WE should feel about sexual violence. And all I could think in that moment was SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP because this person had absolutely no right to speak on the subject, let alone talk down to us. I think anyone can relate to the experience of having someone who has no idea what they're talking about, either trying to talk down to you or control you. This is a call to arms for any and all marginalized people for our voices to be heard and for everyone else to take this time to simply listen.
As for the album itself, Lauren says there are many issues she tackles in the lyrics:
This album really sinks its teeth into discussions about systemic, social and political issues, but from a totally personal perspective. I'll never claim to speak for all women or femmes, or all LGBTQIA people; we're all unique individuals with unique experiences. But my hope is that a woman can share and can relate to my experiences through this music and so they can feel like they have a place here too, that's the most important thing to me. To make sure everyone of all genders, races, and sexualities know that they have a place with us in our music and at our shows. We want this record to be the springboard for larger conversations in the music industry, in our community and our society as a whole. We want to blend art with activism, so as to create a movement of empowerment and positive change.
