Remember when movie soundtracks kicked ass? Me too. In this article, I take a look back at tracks that were released exclusively on a movie soundtrack. Some of the songs were the brainchild of producers that wanted to blur genre lines and some were just fans of the band and wanted new tracks for their feature films.
"Teething" by Deftones – The Crow: City Of Angels
Deftones dusted off a B-side from the Adrenaline sessions for the sequel to the Brandon Lee masterpiece. In my opinion, this is one of the better songs from the early days of the band and should have been on the debut album. It is a definite non skip any time it comes on the shuffle. Even though they may owe Faith No More a sandwich for the riff.
"Judgement Night" by Biohazard & Onyx – Judgement Night
The foundation of nü-metal could be traced back to this soundtrack. The mixture of Biohazard and Onyx made for the best recipe since Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. The title track from the movie is the ultimate one-two punch. The two groups also shine on the Bionyx remix of "Slam".
"Kick The P.A." by Korn & The Dust Brothers – Spawn
The Spawn soundtrack had the same idea as the Judgement Night soundtrack, but did not have the same groundbreaking results. The album brought together heavyweights from the electronic and nü-metal worlds. This could have been a precursor to Korn's dubstep phase.
"Make A Move" by Incubus – Stealth
Incubus wrote a handful of new songs for the Jamie Foxx led action film Stealth. "Make a Move" was the first single from the album and featured in the trailer. The album also features a collaboration with Incubus and Chrissie Hynde. Guitarist Mike Einziger stated that director Rob Cohen was a big fan and "wouldn't stop asking". A must listen for all Incubus fans including Rob Cohen.
"New Divide" by Linkin Park – Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen
Shinoda and the boys recorded this banger for Michael Bay and the robots in disguise. While the movies are not my favorites, the way Linkin Park is used in the first two movies is iconic. The band perfectly encapsulates the feel of the movies and you can't think of one without the other with this track and "What I've Done" from the first film.
