Bohemian Rhapsody Wins Big at The Golden Globe Awards Amid Backstage Drama

Queen win big, and Satan gets a nice shout out.

Queen win big, and Satan gets a nice shout out.

Last night was The Golden Globe Awards – and the official kickoff to awards season.

Satan had a big moment – as Christian Bale gave thanks to Lucifer almighty for the inspiration to play Dick Cheney when claiming his award.

But the big moment for rock music was just how well recieved the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, was.

The film won Best Drama (it was odd that the movie was nominated in the drama category and not the Best Musical or Comedy, since ya'know.) The movie's star, Rami Malek also took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury.

While everybody was excited in front of the cameras, backstage during the press conferences is when the real drama started. The drama surrounds Bohemian Rhapsody director Bryan Singer. Singer was removed from the film two weeks before shooting was to conclude and replaced with Rocketman director Dexter Fletcher.

This was right around the time Singer was accused of sexual misconduct and in their statement announcing a new director, 20th Century Fox said the firing was due to “unreliability and unprofessionalism” regarding “personal issues.”  Singer was not present at the awards show, nor did anybody mention his name when winning their awards for the movie. Members of the film giving interviews after they won awards avoided any questions about Singer, while Twitter was ablaze with backlash for the decision.

For his part, Singer posted a brief note on Instagram thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press (the governing body of the award show) for the nomination.
