Netflix has acquired the rights to Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, the new movie about Ted Bundy starring Zac Efron and featuring Metallica's James Hetfield in his acting debut.
The film was purchased on the heels of its premiere at Sundance – where James Hetfield showed up looking like a boss. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Netflix paid $9 million for the film.
Netflix already has a relationship with the director of the film, Joe Berlinger, who produced the docu-series on the Ted Bundy tapes. So this was a natural fit. I'm sure Netflix also saw the interest in the documentary and realized they could parlay that into interest about the film.
James Hetfield plays the Utah highway patrolman who first arrested Ted Bundy in 1975 and shares scenes with Haley Joel Osment, who also plays a cop. The film was directed by Joe Berlinger, who worked on the infamous Metallica doc Some Kind of Monster.
An official release date has yet to be announced. Here is the trailer for the film:
