It's Monday and Mondays suck, so let's grind it out with Disuse The Yeti From Ka-Man-Ra.
Welcome to the first Monday Grind of 2019. Yeah, it was supposed to be last week but things come up. Like they do every time this column doesn't get published. Whatever it's here now. But by the time you're done reading this, this album might be over. Go ahead, push that play button and time it.
Disuse is a four piece grind unit straight out of the Netherlands. Though they're only entering their second year as a band, they've already got six releases to their name. And when it comes to this form of grind, it's the purest, no bullshit type of grind out there. Distilled blasts and noise with no filler.
The Yeti From Ka-Man-Ra has a single track that clocks in over a minute. That's right. Just one track that crosses the minute mark. It's not anything new for grindcore, but it's notable here because of how big and raw Disuse can sound. All at once the band is heavy but also incredibly brief. It's got an almost mince feel mixed with an old school grind sound. The filth and punk is always there, but that heavy tinge of old school death metal just doesn't let up.
Once the opener "No Part of My Agro Culture" passes, tracks grind by quick. What Disuse is incredibly good at is utilizing minimalism. There's no point where it feels like they need to go on or nabbed or beat so hard that it's wasted potential. It's exactly what it needs to be: a quick punch of grind, a blast or heavy passage, and bam, onto the next one. It's oddly satisfying.
If you've heard of Sidetracked, then you have an idea of what you're in for. Imagine that but grindier and heavier. Regradless, Disuse is a great way to grind in the new year, if you haven't already. Y'know, two weeks in. And if you have, then grind down this Monday and make it short with some of The Yeti From Ka-Man-Ra.
