So yes, Jon Nödtveidt was pretty crazy in terms of his crimes and his attachment to “anti-cosmic satanism.” Yet it’s entirely possible that the same eccentricity that drew him to those ways of thinking also drove his artistic vision for Dissection. Needless to say, a thorough psychoanalytic evaluation of a dead person lies beyond the scope of this article. So with that in mind, it’s better to focus on the music instead. Whether you prefer the folk-laden steamroller of The Somberlain or the near-perfection of Storm of the Light’s Bane, Dissection is rightly hailed as one of the most important extreme metal bands of all time. And though I prefer the second album, The Somberlain is probably most responsible for inspiring the bands below, from the mid-neck guitar riffs, to the howling vocals, a voice seemingly spawned from ghosts of ages past.
