Blackened Melodic Death Metal: A History Lesson

These bands embody all the best things about metal: catchy riffs and great songwriting, effective use of melody to create a narrative structure, vocals soaked in reverb, and all the brutality one needs without resorting to cheesiness or self-parody.

Dawn

Perhaps the most unknown band on the list. Dawn only released two full-length albums through their initial period of activity, but one of them, Nær SĂłlen Gar NiĂľer for Evogher, stands as an undeniable work of heavy metal art. And luckily for all of us, Century Media officially re-issued the album last year (remastered by Dan Swanö…does he ever sleep?), along with 1997’s Slaughtersun. Also be sure to check out their more orthodox (and totally crushing) death metal material from The Eternal Forest demos.
