After eight years of promising a new album was coming and teasing being in the studio here and there, Dimmu Borgir recently announced they'll officially release their new album Eonion on May 4. The cover artwork for Eonian was done by Zbigniew M. Bielak (Ghost, Behemoth, Mayhem) and the album was engineered by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Katatonia), and the album also features live drummer Daray and keyboardist Geriloz, as well as the Schola Cantrum Choir.
Now for the first time since 2010's Abrahadabra, we've got a new song, which seriously might be my new favorite Dimmu Borgir track. "Interdimensional Summit" is a massive, grandiose dose of gilded fucking evil that was absolutely worth the wait. I cannot possibly overstate how much I love this song â it's everything fantastically dark about the band's early works with the behemoth orchestrations of the later stuff, and of course some new sounds tossed in there.
Dimmu Borgir will release their new album, Eonian, on May 4th via Nuclear Blast. Eonian follows a philosophical concept, dealing with the illusion of time:
âTime, when not approaching it from the construct weâre used to canât be defined and thus it is illusoryâ, explains guitarist Silenoz. âThereâs only an âeternal nowâ, which the album title is already hinting at. When we travel between the worlds seen and unseen, the perception of time ceases to exist, it has no function. Our energy is our torch and our compass when we make rifts and pierce through the veil â when we go beyond.â
Vocalist Shagrath adds: âEonian represents the illusion of time, everything that is and always has been. For us, it also marks the 25th anniversary of DIMMU BORGIR and the album itself is a tribute to our own history and the Norwegian black metal history.â
