South African death dealers The Fallen Prophets have returned and decided they are not done with 2020. Though they released a full-length back in February titled Relentless Killing Motivation, they have chosen to close out this plague of a year with a new EP delightfully titled No End In Sight. And today, we preview the EP opener “Dead But Still Alive,” featuring vocals from Kris Xenopoulos of Vulvodynia, Technopath and Xavleg.
“Dead But Still Alive” is four-minutes of heavy, brutal death metal that comes at the listener like a locomotive. It is a slab of death that while plenty vicious leaves room to build up some melodies. The track opens like a counsel of doom is passing judgment, and when the band kicks in its like a pounding gavel. It is fast and hard, almost like something Wormed might do. However, once it kicks into a breakdown, the band uses the time to build on some licks and peel some vocals.
The track gets a little bouncier from there and then kicks up the speed some, going into full stampede mode. The guitar solo hits not long after that in a bluesy kinda way. There’s some air for shred before the drums start carrying the song further. And of course, we finish all barrels blazing.
If you have missed out on The Fallen Prophets until now, there is some backlog to chew through and this to look forward to. The band’s sound is incredibly heavy and tight. Those that like their death metal brutal and melodic should smash that play button now.
