Power Trip played their first show since the tragic passing of vocalist Riley Gale in 2020 on December 1, 2023 at the Mohawk in Austin, TX. Power Trip is currently fronted by Fugitive vocalist Seth Gilmore and has played a handful of shows since then plus a whole boatload coming up this year. Which of course begs the question of if Power Trip will release new music with Gilmore anytime soon. According to Power Trip guitarist Blake Ibanez in a new interview with Chaoszine, the short answer is "no."
Ibanez notes that he and Power Trip drummer Chris Ulsh recorded the music they had for a new Power Trip record after Gale's death, but never got anyone to do vocals on it. Ibanez later adds that he's just thrilled for the opportunity for Power Trip to tour again, and that the band is taking things one day at a time.
"After everything happened in 2020, we were looking for something to do. Me and Ulsh were… we finished up some music we had written for the Power Trip album and went and recorded a bunch of stuff, and just kind of sat on it. We're like 'maybe someone will sing on this one day.' Ultimately it didn't really happen. After that got shelved, that's when all this stuff happened with Seth and us playing again.
"I think right now, we're just enjoying being back on stage together. Like I said, we played five or six shows. Now we're out here with Pantera which we didn't expect to tour or to get invited to do anything like this, so as soon as we… to be able to be afforded an opportunity like this after not even being able to step on a stage for years is amazing.
"We're very fortunate. We're just trying to enjoy being back together and playing again, and who knows – I think at some point obviously we'll want to go back to all that stuff and maybe consider doing something with it. But I think right now we've just been approaching every step like 'how does this feel? How does this feel?' So far everything's been good."
