You can't make this stuff up! Last night, the Austin Music Commission held a meeting on potential new business and one of the items on the agenda was a "statue of Danzig riding a dragon welcoming visitors to the RRCD (Red River Cultural District).
We have created a rendering, above, of what the statue would look like.
According to KEYE, the idea was suggested by a local venue owner:
The idea for the Danzig statue is attributed to James Moody, the owner of The Mohawk, the famous live music venue that sits at Red River and 10th streets. When reached by phone Monday afternoon, Moody acknowledged the idea was mostly in jest. But he added, "if they're willing to do it in gold, I'll submit it as a serious idea." He also suggested ruby eyes for the simulacrum of the man who also fronted the 80s metal band Samhain.
No word on how the meeting went, but we hope it passes. Danzig has a long history in Austin, most recently causing a stir for lack of French onion soup.
