System Of A Down bassist Shado Odadjian is in the studio with producer and Winds Of Plague guitarist Michael Montoya working on a "heavy" solo project. Odadjian said he's getting back to his roots with the record, which is great considering we're never getting a new System Of A Down record.
"After years of experimenting with different styles and genres for my side projects, I decided to go back to my roots and make a heavy solo record," said Odadjian." Been working hard writing and recording with my bro [Michael Montoya] for a few months now. Here’s a lil snippet of what’s to come. Who wants to hear more of this?"
Interestingly, vocalist Howard Jones (Light The Torch, ex-Killswitch Engage) posted a photo of himself in the studio with Odadjian and Montoya back in December. Whether that has anything to do with Odadjian's solo project remains to be seen, but the members certainly line up.
Odadjian elaborated on his upcoming album in an interview with Sobre La Dosis, saying System Of A Down is still on a creative hiatus and that his new stuff will indeed be heavy.
"[There won't be new System Of A Down] in the near future. We're still on a musical hiatus – a creative hiatus – but we're playing at Sick New World in Las Vegas on May 13th and I got a solo record coming out very soon. So that's heavy, and it's big. It's not hip-hop, it's just crazy because usually all my side projects have been kind of hip-hoppy or electro, but I went down and I wanted to do something that felt right to me from day one. That's my DNA. So look out for the solo record."
Sick New World will take place on May 13, 2023 at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds in Las Vegas, NV and the lineup is a nü-metal dream including everyone from System Of A Down, Korn, Deftones, and Incubus to Evanescence, Mr. Bungle, Turnstile, Kittie, Cradle Of Filth. Check it out here.
