At The Gates has a new album next month. Remember them? Of course you do. Despite their triumphant series of reunion tours, the band hasn’t released any new material since Clinton’s first term in office; but that’s finally about to change. For better or worse, the reunion and the “comeback album” have become quintessential parts of the heavy metal landscape.

Carcass and Gorguts both came back strong in 2013 after a decade or so out of the limelight, releasing some of the most well received music of their careers. A five year gap and battle with cancer couldn’t stop Behemoth from unleashing The Satanist last February. Hell, Iron Maiden has enjoyed a decade plus victory lap around the globe after hooking up with Bruce Dickinson again on 2000’s Brave New World.

Of course, for every welcome return to form, there’s a Illud Divinum Insanus or St. Anger lurking in the shadows that reminds us some acts should just stay in limbo. This list is a compilation of defunct bands from recent memory that could either come back strong and rock the summer festival circuit like Refused and Quicksand, or go full on Faith No More and grace us with potentially awesome new music after a prolonged absence from the scene. Hurry back guys…our ears are ready.
